1954
July The first Chinese produced aircraft, the CJ-5, successfully completes maiden flight in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, China.
August Successful production trial of New China’s first aero engine, the AM-11, in Zhuzhou, Hunan Province, China.
1957
December The first Chinese-made multi-purpose civil aircraft, the Y-5, completes its maiden flight in Nanchang.
1959
September The J-6 concludes a successful maiden flight in Shenyang.
September The H6 bomber, independently assembled in China, finishes successful maiden flight in Harbin.
   
1963
September The Z-5 helicopter passes quality inspections and is certified. On December 5, the J-6 also earns a high quality certification.
1966
January The Chinese-made aircraft, the J-7, which is capable of traveling at twice the speed of sound, successfully completes its maiden flight in Shenyang. This is a turning point wherein China now has the capability to independently manufacture the second generation of fighter planes.
September The H-5 light bomber completes successful maiden flight in Harbin.
1951
April The CPC Central Committee established the Ministry of Heavy Industry’s Bureau of Aviation Industry. Duan Zijun is appointed Director.
1956
May The first jet engine built in China, the WP-5, successfully completes trial production in Shenyang.
July The first Chinese-made jet fighter. the J-5, completes maiden flight in Shenyang.
1958
May The WP-1A, the first Chinese independently-designed turbojet engine, successfully finishes trial production in Shenyang.
July The first JJ-1 aircraft independently-designed by China successfully completes its maiden flight in Shenyang.
December The first Z-5 helicopter, independently developed by China, performs successful maiden flight in Harbin.
1962
January China’s primary training plane, the CJ-6, independently Chinese designed and manufactured, is finalized and enters production. Tens of thousands of pilots trained for the armed forces using this aircraft.
1965
June China’s first independently-designed combat jet aircraft, the Q-5, makes successful maiden flight.
1967
March The first large Chinese jet engine, the WP-8, passes identification and acceptance requirements and enters batch production.
1969
July The first independently-designed, high-altitude, high-speed, Chinese-made aircraft, the J-8, successfully completes its maiden flight in Shenyang.

1971
June The first early warning aircraft, the KJ-1, makes a successful maiden flight in Shaanxi.
1974
December The first medium-sized transport aircraft, the Y-8, independently manufactured by China, finishes a successful maiden flight in Shaanxi.
   
1984
June The high-altitude, high-speed, multi-purpose, all-weather aircraft, the J-8, completes a successful maiden flight in Shenyang.
1985
March Shanghai Aviation Industry Company signs a contract with McDonnell-Douglas to jointly produce the MD-82 aircraft in Shanghai. In March, 1989, both sides sign another agreement, this time to jointly assemble 10 MD-82/83 aircraft.
December The Z-8 achieves a successful maiden flight in Jingdezhen, which moves China to the top rank among developing countries capable of producing large helicopters.
1991
December China’s Air Refueling Project achieves its goal with the first refueling of an aircraft in flight.
1992
November The WZ-8A engine, assembled in a Z-9 aircraft, passes national technical appraisal.
1997
August The first coaxial helicopter, the M16, successfully completes maiden flight in Beijing.
1998
March The J-10 aircraft completes a successful maiden flight. This achievement marks a turning point for Chinese fighter aircraft, the historical leap from second generation to third generation fighter planes.
September The first generation of practical ground effect aircraft, the DXF100, carries out successful maiden flight in Hubei. On June 12, 1999, this type of craft enters operation in Zhejiang.
December The J-11A aircraft completes a successful maiden flight.

1976
April The independently manufactured Chinese aircraft, the SH-5, realizes a successful maiden flight in Hubei.
1980
September The large passenger jet aircraft, the Y-10, independently designed and manufactured by China, carries out its successful maiden flight in Shanghai.
December A new generation of unmanned, high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, the WZ-5, is successfully developed.
1988
February The J-7 III aircraft and its WP-13 engine are finalized.
October The first generation of attack helicopters, the Z-9W, completes a successful maiden flight in Jingdezhen.
December The first generation of supersonic fighter-bombers, the FBC-1, makes a successful maiden flight in Xian.
1990
June The multipurpose transport aircraft, the Y-12, obtains an airworthiness certificate issued by the British CAA, which is the first time a Chinese civil aircraft obtains an international certificate.
November The basic trainer, the K8, jointly invested in and developed by China and Pakistan, makes triumphant maiden flight.
1993
March The 1st Session of the 8th National People’s Congress passes a proposal to establish the China Aviation Industry Corporation, initiating the transformation of China’s aviation industry into an enterprise operation.

2002
May The first advanced plane engine, the Kunlun turbojet engine passes national design finalizing inspections.
2005
December The JL-9, an advanced training plane, passed technical appraisal.
December The first Chinese high-thrust turbofan engine, the Taihang, is finalized.
2007
December The ARJ21-700, a new regional jet which China possesses independent intellectual property right to, rolls off the production line.
2010
March The first large Chinese civil helicopter, the AC313, achieves a successful maiden flight.
2000
March The MA 60 regional aircraft makes a successful maiden flight in Xi’an.
December The light helicopter, the Z-11 passes national design finalizing inspections.
2003
April The first new type of special-purpose attack helicopter completes its maiden flight successfully.
July The first light gas turbine, the QD128, QD70 aero engine unit links up with the national power grid at Zhongyuan Oil Field in Henan Province. This marks the gas turbine’s entry into commercialization.
August The new FC-1 fighter, jointly developed by China and Pakistan, completes its successful maiden flight.
2006
March The new generation of advanced training planes, the L-15, is independently developed in China. It completes its maiden flight successfully.
December The medium-thrust, augmented turbofan engine, Qinling, is finalized.
   
2008
October China’s new generation of turboprop regional jets, the MA 600, has its successful maiden flight .
November Approved by the State Council, the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) is officially established. Lin Zuoming is appointed President.
